Homicides throughout the city fell in August, compared to last month, but homicides increased year-to-date versus last year’s numbers, based on preliminary statistics released Friday by the Chicago Police Department. There were 22 fewer murders– 40–this month, a considerable drop from July’s total of 62, police said at a news conference at police headquarters. From January to August this year, there were 331 homicides, a 14.7 percent increase from the same period last year. There were 291 homicides logged for the first eight months of 2007. The dismantling of gang hierarchy by police and the increased friction between smaller gang factions have contributed to the rise in crime and murder totals, police told the Defender earlier this month. ______ Copyright 2008 Chicago Defender.
