Chicago police collected significantly fewer firearms Saturday, compared to last year’s efforts, during the department’s annual Gun Turn-In program. Residents turned in 1,883 guns –– no questions asked –– to 27 locations throughout the city, according to Chicago Police News Affairs Officer JoAnn Taylor. Last year, the department netted 6,800 firearms and has collected more than 18,000 since the program began in 2005. Each firearm turned in earned the giver a $10, $50 or $100 gift card, police said. ______ Copyright 2009 Chicago Defender. All rights reserved.
