CARBONDALE, Ill. — A range of windy storms has taken just a few hours to dump inches of rain on parts of Illinois, covering roads with water and downing trees. National Weather Service meteorologist Ed Shimon says the storms have inundated areas of the state with as much as three inches of rain within 50 minutes. He calls that accumulation "unbelievable," comparing it to heavy rainfall in the tropics. Shimon says the storms will linger in southern Illinois into the early morning, with continuing lighting, heavy rainfall and strong wind gusts. Dozens of counties remain under tornado watches and flash flood warnings. There were no immediate reports of injuries. Authorities say about 100 flights were canceled at O’Hare International Airport, with delays averaging 45 minutes. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
