The 50th Annual Big Dipper Basketball Tournament hosted by Rich Township High School is underway, and its athletic administration is joyous to bring families an engaging event during their holiday break.

Lou Adams, Rich Township Basketball Head Coach, said it’s a reunion many can appreciate.

“Kids [are] back home from school. They went to different schools out here. A lot of parents went to these different schools in the south suburbs. They’re able to see each other [after] haven’t seen each other for a long time,” he said.

The first winning team of the tournament was Bishop McNamara, who won back in 1973.

Adams sees the tournament as a great showcase in 2023, with notable talent from across the south suburbs and Chicago under one roof.

“What makes this good now is you got Thornton. The best player in the state, Morez Johnson. Hyde Park has a great team. Rich Township has been playing really well now from a long time ago.”

He also mentioned Homewood-Flossmoor, which happens to be ranked No. 2 in the state.

Adams said he tag-teamed with RTHS Assistant Coach Mark “Rust” Lester and Athletic Director Steve Diversey to give guests a welcoming experience.

“The hospitality room, [and] different teams coming in,” Adams said. “Giving out gifts and stuff at half-time.”

The tournament continues with the Semi-finals on Thursday. Rich Township will face off against Homewood-Flossmoor at 6:30 p.m. Hyde Park will take on Thornton at 8 p.m.

The final round will be Friday at 8 p.m.
