A diverse group of Chicago faith leaders announced Thursday that it would provide spiritual support for city students, as part of crime-fighting efforts.

The Chicago Clergy Coaltion met at West Side Rev. Ira Acree’s Greater St. John Bible Church where they announced the initiative.

The group will set up a citywide prayer line for students that will be coordinated by Rev. Barbara Ellzey of Apostolic Faith Church, the group announced in a written statement.

Next month, the clergy group will travel to the state capitol to urge Illinois legislators to adopt “sensible” gun legislation. The faith leaders plan to deliver petitions with 50,000 signatures on the trip to Springfield planned for March 13.

Ministers will also plan to visit with legislators from both the state House and Senate.
