Ex-NFL Player Sergio Brown Arrested on Murder Charge in Mother’s Death

Former NFL player and Proviso East High School football star Sergio Brown was arrested Tuesday in Southern California to face first-degree murder charges in the death of his 73-year-old mother.

The San Diego Police Department, along with other local and federal authorities, took Brown into custody as he was re-entering the U.S. through San Diego from Mexico, according to authorities.

The agencies acted after a warrant was issued for the death of his mother, Myrtle Brown.

As of Thursday, Brown was awaiting extradition to Maywood.

Family Representative Christian A. Conway, Esq. issued the following statement on behalf of the family concerning the latest developments:

Our family is thankful that the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office answered our call for urgent and immediate action in the case of our beloved Myrtle Jean Simmons-Brown. We are also heartened by the news that Sergio Brown has been apprehended and returned to the United States unharmed. Our family is prayerful that, as the investigation progresses, more answers will become available, shedding light on the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking incident.

Last month, Myrtle and Sergio Brown were declared Missing Persons on a Saturday after family members and Maywood police could not locate them.

After police searched Myrtle Brown’s residence, they discovered her body near a creek near her home.

The Maywood Police Department asks that anyone with knowledge of this incident contact Maywood Police Investigations Sergeant Pezdek at (708) 368-4131 or the Maywood Police Department Anonymous Tip Line at (708) 450-1787.
