Fifth-through-eighth-grade tennis players from 30 Chicago Public Schools squared off in a year-end championship competition Saturday in Tuley Park, 91st Street and Martin Luther King Drive.
The event also included the donation to CPS schools of more than 150 “gently used” tennis racquets courtesy of Midtown Tennis Club as part of its Spread the Love campaign.
A former CPS student, Vasiliy Guryanov of Midtown, coordinated the effort on behalf of the club. Guryanov is a graduate of, and former tennis player at, Von Steuben High School.
More than 200 students competed in tennis matches throughout the morning.
The participating schools included: Albany Park, Clinton, Clark, Young, Spencer, Lewis, Ames, Manierre, Ericson, Daley, Hawthorne, Mayer, LaSalle, Lincoln, Dodge, Kanoon, and Gary.
Also, Randolph, Libby, Beasley, Banneker, Barnard, Coles, Schmid, Ashburn, Evers, Wendell Green, Black, Neil, and Grissom. The Medgar Evers team captured the championship.
