Milestones – Sympathy to the family of Dr. James W. Wagner, founding president of the Hyde Park Jazz Society, who has lost his bout with cancer. A memorial is Saturday, 3 p.m., at University Church, 57th and University. In ‘95, Wagner formed the Committee to Restore Jazz to Hyde Park with the goal of returning the community to its “glory days” as a mecca for jazz. The committee enlisted the support of two past presidents of the University of Chicago, which resulted in the relocation of the Checkerboard Lounge from Bronzeville to Hyde Park’s Harper Court. The Committee, now HPJS, sponsors CheckerJazz, a Sunday night jazz series at the New Checkerboard Lounge for Blues & Jazz, and supports performances by high school jazz students with a Sunday afternoon series. Send messages of sympathy to his wife, Almarie Wagner, 5312 S. Hyde Park Blvd., Chicago 60615. For more, call Carolyn Albritton, (773) 955-9093. What a loss!
