An international human rights group is urging European peacekeepers to step up their deployment to the troubled Central African Republic.
Amnesty International said Wednesday that the European Union “must immediately put into action its plans” to deploy troops to protect civilians.
The statement comes amid a spike in violence on the streets of the capital, where Red Cross officials say at least 15 civilians have been killed since Saturday.
Christian Mukosa, a researcher with Amnesty International, says it’s further proof that the 6,000 African troops and 2,000 French forces in place cannot quell the violence alone.
The EU had promised to send as many as 1,000 soldiers.
The French government says that other European countries haven’t come through with promised contributions.
