Meridian Private Yachts, a family-owned business established by former electrician Clifton Bishop, is one of the Chicago corporations participating in Black Yacht Weekend. Clifton Bishop became hooked on yachting and used his savings as an electrician to purchase his first yacht. For more than a century, Chicago has been a top U.S. destination for African Americans seeking a better life. From July 23 – 24, 2022, Travel and yachting enthusiasts will gather to enjoy Black Yacht Weekend at 31st Street Harbor on the southside of Chicago.
The Chicago Defender had a chance to tour one of Meridian’s luxury yachts and speak with the owner about his company and Black Yacht Weekend.
There will be food, drinks, entertainment, networking, and good times aboard private yachts, which will be gathered in an area of the lake called the “Play Pen” on Saturday, July 23 from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM. On Sunday, July 24th, from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM., a party will be held at 31st Street Beach.
Saniqua, one of the founders of Black Yacht Weekend says the weekend was founded to highlight all things black. “We highlight the diversity of aquatic experiences in Chicago. I think one thing that a lot of people don’t know is that there are a lot of black charter companies in the city of Chicago, and there is no outlet for highlighting those experiences. We decided to put together this annual event where we can highlight all things Chicago and all things Black.”
