The Grasshopper Club opened in February as a new hospitality-driven dispensary experience founded by Chicago natives. With over 30 years in cannabis and hospitality, its knowledgeable concierge team can curate and provide products and elevated experiences to inspire connections, exploration, fun and impact.

“Grasshopper Club was created out of a desire to change how people explore cannabis,” said owner Matthew Brewer, “We wanted to create a safe space where our customers can learn about products and brands, people and communities. The result is the Grasshopper Club. We are a hospitality-driven experience inspired by the culture, legacy and vibes of the community.”

In July 2022, the State of Illinois saw a 50% increase in total tax revenue thanks to the legalization of cannabis, equating to a whopping $445.3 million take-home for the state, compared to $297.7 million in 2021. Three years after the legalization of marijuana sales in Illinois, a Black independent-owner is finally able to take part in the lucrative market.

“When cannabis was illegal, the vast majority of cannabis-related arrests and convictions were black and brown people,” said Brewer. “Now that cannabis is legal, black and brown people have almost no ownership in this industry. That is part of our inspiration to open doors and create a diverse ecosystem in the industry.”
