An early Sunday morning fire that razed a West Side apartment building killed an elderly sister and brother who had lived in the area for nearly 50 years. Eva Mae Pierson, 90, and Early Giles, 85, who both had medical issues that warranted assistance, preferred to live alone in their two-flat home in the 1900 block of South Homan Avenue. Pierson used a walker to get around, and Giles used a wheelchair because both of his legs were amputated. Relatives were finally able to get the siblings to agree to move into an assisted-living facility. They were scheduled to move this week until the fire broke out. Fire officials said the home did have a smoke detector, but it hasn’t been determined if it was in working condition. Two other homes were also damaged by the blaze, displacing 11 people. The cause of the fire is under investigation. ______ Copyright 2009 Chicago Defender. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
