The spread of Ebola in Guinea hasn’t slowed down like its government has claimed, according to the World Health Organization.
Reuters reported that 21 people have died and there have been 37 new cases of “suspected” Ebola recorded there between May 29 and June 1. It causes a haemorrhagic fever with extremely high fatality rates, up to 90 percent.
There have been a total of 208 deaths connected to the disease and there is no cure or vaccine for Ebola.
According to Reuters, more than half of the new deaths were near the Sierra Leone border in the Gueckedou region, which is where the outbreak began in February.
The situation is “more and more under control thanks to measures taken by the government and its partners,” said Guinea’s health ministry in a statement.
The World Health Organization has deployed five more experts to try and stop the disease from spreading. They are also monitoring 600 people who have been identified as potentially making contact with Ebola.
