EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) — East St. Louis police are scheduled to vote on a tentative plan that would reverse the layoffs of 19 officers in the cash-strapped city. Bargainers for the officers’ union and the city reached the tentative deal Tuesday night, two days after the layoffs involving about 30 percent of the police force took effect. Details of the agreement haven’t been released, pending Thursday’s police vote. If union members ratify the deal, officers could return to the job as early as Thursday afternoon. City leaders also have eliminated 11 firefighter positions, and both sides held private talks on that Wednesday. The firefighters’ union will meet Friday about its options.
