 Tenor saxophone virtuoso Sonny Rollins is returning to Symphony Center for Jazz at Symphony Center April 9 at 8 p.m. The Grammy Award winning influential jazz artist was born Theodore Walter “Sonny” Rollins September 7, 1930 in New York City following his parents’ move from the Virgin Islands. At first he performed the alto sax at age 11, however the tenor saxophone became his most dynamic instrument and by 20, he  was an associate of Thelonious Monk. During his career, Rollins wrote tunes that eventually became legendary jazz compositions such as “St. Thomas”, “Oleo”, “Doxy”, and “Airegin”.

Following his 1957 Carnegie Hall debut, Rollins became internationally famous and has outlived most of his contemporaries including John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Max Roach and Art Blakey. VELVET LOUNGE, 67 E. Cermak Road, begins Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. with James Sanders on violin, Harrison Bankhead on bass and cello, along with Avreeayl Ra on drums. Thursday at 8:30 p.m. features Many Blessings with Lucas Gillan (drums), Marquis Hill (trumpet), Jonathon Edwards (baritone sax) and Darius Savage (bass).

CHICAGO CELEBRATES 90 YEARS OF RAVI SHANKAR April 7 from 6 p.m.-10 p.m. at the Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington St. Admission is free and seating is first come, first seated. The legendary Indian sitar master has performed in the Western musical world for a half century. THE HORSE’S HA’ WITH SPECIAL GUESTS Ronnie Malley and Wanees Zazur will be featured Thursday at 6:30 p.m. The Horse’s Ha’s unique sound is a mixture of compelling jazz and folk hybrid, infused with echoes of British folk styles.

AN AFRICAN JUBILEE SERIES of programs begins with Diblo Dibala, Thursday at 8 p.m. at the International House, 1414 E. 59th St. Tickets $25, $10 for students wit ID. Diblo Dibala hails from Kisangani, Congo, where he mastered the guitar while working with the region’s finest musicians, such as Kanda Bongo, Franco and the late Pepe Kalle.

THE BLACK STAR PROJECT, The Faith Community of Saint Sabina and Iyago Entertainment Group will host the Chicago Premiere of the nationally acclaimed documentary “Men II Boys” Friday at Saint Sabina Church, 1210 W. 78th Place at 7 p.m.
