Anthony McGill

 Anthony McGill, principal clarinet artist, will join the Avalon String Quartet in concert April 18 for the Merit School of Music, 38 S. Peoria. The Metropolitan Opera will join the musicians as guest. The entire world witnessed McGill’s performance when he joined Yo- Yo Ma, cellist, for the inauguration of Barack Obama.

Raised in the Chatham community of Chicago, McGill attended the Merit School and his brother, Demarre, who is a flute virtuoso, were first featured in the Museum of Science and Industry’s annual Christmas concert with the All-City Elementary Choir.

THE CHICAGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago will blend their artistic elements in performance with Esa-Peka Salonen, conductor and Jim Vincent, artistic director featuring Falla’s Three Dances from El amor bujo, Bates Music from Underground Spaces, Ravel’s Mother Goose and Ravel’s La valse Thursday in Orchestra Hall, 220 S. Michigan Ave. at 8 p.m.

CONGO SQUARE THEATRE COMPANY, 777 N. Green St., is featuring a stage festival reading of 10 outstanding staged readings in celebration of its most dynamic shows April 23 through May 2. eta, 7558 S. South Chicago Ave., THEATRE  FAMILY MATINEE –  “Destination Freedom” by Richard Durham continues on Saturdays through May 29 with an inspirational rendition of songs, dances and Langston Hughes’ poetry. The revue is a mixture of radio broadcasts of A Shakespeare in Harlem: The Story of  Langston Hughes and Negro Cinderella: the Story of Lena Horne. Runako Jahi directs and Clarice Durham produces.

PORTOLUZ PORTNERS ALONG WITH LOCAL African and African American curators consisting of Vieux Farka Toura will be presented Thursday at 8 p.m. at 3855 N. Lincoln Ave. Tickets are $25.

BOUREIMA “VIEUX” FARKA TOURE, the son of the great Malian quitarist Ali Farka Ture, will perform Friday at 700 E. Oakwood Blvd. at 8 p.m. admission $15.

THE LYRICAL BEAUTY of Being Dufay provides his hauntingly wonderful sounds Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Chicago Cultural Center, Preston Bradley Hall, 78 E. Washington St. The artist combines early music with some of today’s most cutting-edge digital techniques in a lush, harmonic sound world.

LIBER ENSEMBLE, CROWNED WITH LAURELD will be presented by the University of Chicago April 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the Rockefeller Memorial Chapel, 5850 S. Woodlawn Ave. Admission $32; $5 for students with valid ID at 773-702-8068.

JAZZ AT SYMPHONY CENTER, 220 S. Michigan Ave., brings to Chicago audiences one of the worlds most significant saxophone artists, Joshua Redman, April 23 at 8 p.m. In the final years of the 20th century, he emerged as one of the most dynamic improvisers. Sharring the concert with Redman is the Anat Cohen Quartet. She is an Israeli-born musician who mixes jazz, classical music, Brazilian choro, Argentine tango and Afro-Cuban styles.
