Chicago Shakespeare Theater of Navy Pier has included three African American actors in its production of the “Romeo and Juliet” stage play that runs through November 21 at the Courtyard Theater. Kenn E. Head plays Escalus, an apothecary; Ora Jones is cast as Nurse; and Lily Mojekwu is Lady Montague.
Tickets are $44-$75 and patrons receive a 40 percent parking discount at Navy Pier garages. FOLLOWING A GRAND introductory concert in Millennium Park as the Chicago Symphony’s tenth musical director, Riccardo Muti continues the Festa Muti through October 17 with a Berlioz Spectacular at Symphony Center, 220 S. Michigan Ave. Featured will be Mario Zeffiri, tenor; Kyle Ketelsen, bass-baritone; Gerard Depardieu, narrator; the symphony chorus; and Duain Wolfe, director. The compositions will be Berlioz “Symphonie fantastique” and “Lelio” Thursday and Friday at 8 p.m. October 5 at 7:30 the concert features the music of Mozart and Haydn including Haydn’s Symphony No. 39 and 89 and Mozart’s Symphonies 25 and 34. ANNE-SOPHIE MUTTER, VIOLIN IS the featured artist Saturday at 7 p.m. that includes the annual symphony ball. Maestro Muti will conduct the orchestra in Rossini’s “Overture to William Tell”, Beethoven’s “Violin Concerto” and Liszt’s “Les preludes”. CHICAGO SINFONIETTA’S CONCERT NO. 1 features Maestro Paul Freeman, along with guest conductor Harvey Felder, honoring the men and women who have provided music written from three centuries. The event takes place Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Dominican University in Lund Auditorium, 7900 W. Division St. in suburban River Forest, and Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Symphony Center, 220 S. Michigan Ave. Special artists JASC Taiko provides a percussive inventive composition composed by Sinfonietta principal Renee Baker. The 2010-2011 season first program include “Fanfare for the Common Man” by Aaron Copland, “Slavonic Dances Opus 42, No. 4 by Antonin Dvorak, “Fire & Blood” by Michael Daugherty, featuring Tai Murray, violin, “Sundown’s Promise” (for Taiko and Orchestra) Renee Baker with JASC Taiko, director and “On the Waterfront: Symphonic Suite by Leonard Bernstein.
