Audiences who attended Concert No. 4 in the 2008-2009 season held recently at Dominican University in River Forest and in Orchestra Hall at the Chicago Symphony Center were delighted by Dr. Leslie B. Dunner’s conducting of Global Voices, the Chicago Sinfonietta’s performance of vocal and instrumental music. Subscribers learned several cultural elements including the fanfare from Manuel de Falla’s El Sombrero de Tres Picos (The Three Cornered Hat), a two-act ballet scored for a large scale orchestra.
All the way from India, they listened to the ancient vocal Urdu tradition of Ghazal, a poetic expression of both pain of separation and the beauty of love in spite of that pain, which the international star Kiran Ahluwalla expressed in song. Ahluwalla performed five works, including the U.S. Premiere of Chant of Wind and Thunder composed by Glenn Bhur. Mezzo-sopranos Amanda Tarver and Carolyn Sebon joined the Sinfonietta by performing Falla’s magical El Amor Brujo.
