The race for Cook County Board president is heating up now that candidate Dorothy Brown has picked up a key endorsement. U.S. Rep. Danny K. Davis (D-7th) endorsed Brown, clerk of the Cook County Circuit Court, for county board president. “In all the polls I have seen including one I conducted myself, Dorothy was significantly ahead in all categories,” Davis told the Defender. “At this point, I don’t think anyone else can catch up with her.” Previously Davis was a candidate but bowed out in November for fear that “the Black vote would be split thus allowing a non-Black candidate to win,” he said. But Vince Williams, a spokesman for incumbent Todd Stroger, said today’s endorsement will indeed split the Black vote. “Congressman Davis has made a point of expressing his desire to not create or involve himself in any issue that would divide the African American community,” Williams said. “However, this endorsement has the potential to do just that, divide the community.” Brown, who will face Stroger, Alderman Toni Preckwinkle (4) and Water Reclamation District Commissioner Terry O’Brien in the February 2 Democratic primary, said she is confident she will win. “The people are speaking and what they are saying is that they are for Dorothy Brown,” she told the Defender. “I am extremely humble to have received Congressman Davis’ endorsement. “It shows that People trust Dorothy Brown.”
