The Illinois Senate has approved a plan to let doctors dispense antibiotics for the partners of people who have been diagnosed with a STD. The practice is known as "expedited partner therapy." It would permit physicians who are treating an individual for gonorrhea or chlamydia (KLAH’-mid-dee-ah) to also give the patient a single-dose antibiotic to pass along to his or her partner. The proposal also would apply to certain other health care professionals who treat STD-infected patients. Peoria Democratic Sen. David Koehler says sexually transmitted diseases have become a growing problem throughout the state. He says expedited partner therapy would prevent sexual partners from re-infecting one another after one of them seeks medical treatment. The Senate voted 48-6 for Senate Bill 212, which moves to the House. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
