SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The director of the Illinois Department Children and Family Services says he’s leaving the post next month.

Erwin McEwen was appointed director in 2006. In a Thursday statement, he says it’s time for his next challenge and his goal is to continue helping families.

The 49-year-old will step down Sept. 30.

DCFS spokesman Kendall Marlow says McEwen wanted a change after spending years at an extremely demanding job.

McEwen is credited with increasing the agency’s capacity to serve more families and helping the agency win four competitive federal grants. Before he was director, he worked on quality assurance at DCFS. He also worked with several private agencies.

McEwen grew up in Chicago’s Robert Taylor Homes and is the youngest of nine children. He’s a University of Chicago graduate.
