CHICAGO (AP) — The great-granddaughter of civil rights pioneer Ida B. Wells plans to lead a discussion about her relative’s life this month. Michelle Duster also will provide information about efforts to build a monument to honor Wells.
CHICAGO (AP) — The great-granddaughter of civil rights pioneer Ida B. Wells plans to lead a discussion about her relative’s life this month. Michelle Duster also will provide information about efforts to build a monument to honor Wells.
Wells was a journalist, teacher and early leader in the civil rights movement.
The Ida B. Wells Commemorative Art Committee is seeking $300,000 in donations after commissioning noted Chicago artist Richard Hunt to create a sculpture in her honor. The monument will be placed in the historically black Chicago neighborhood of Bronzeville.
Wells died in 1931 and is buried in Chicago. This year is the 150th anniversary of her birth.
The discussion of Wells’ life is planned for Feb. 24 at First Presbyterian Church of Chicago.
