Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. to host regional Day of Service

On Saturday, Oct. 19, more than 100 chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will descend upon their communities to deliver impactful programming and conduct acts of service. We expect thousands of members, volunteers, and community partners to collaborate across 7 states – Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the province of Toronto, Ontario – to be visible and working toward a common goal, which is to provide service under a unifying mantra, “Service in our hearts.”

Locally, the Chicago Alumnae Chapter will fan out across the city of Chicago, with some 300 members and volunteers providing varying services and supports to community organizations.  From the South Side YMCA, where members will assist with cleaning and organizing duties, to Sarah’s Circle-Lakeview Pantry Sheridan, where members will stock shelves and distribute donated goods to address food insecurity.

“As a service sorority, it is our commitment to be of service to the varying communities in Chicago,” said Cathy J. Walker-Murray Chicago Alumnae’s Acting President. “While Chicago Alumnae, as well as chapters that belong to Delta across the Nation and Internationally consistently participate in giving back to their respective communities, this special day of service allows us to highlight to the public the needs of our communities and the outreach of Delta. Service is our foundation and has been our beacon for nearly 107 years.”

Additional community organizations and partners include Marshall High School, Blue Door Neighborhood Center, Feed Cloth and Help the Needy, Cornerstone Community of Outreach. Chicago Food Depository and Chicago Child Care Society.

Other activities include sorting and arranging donations at a homeless shelter, organizing a library, distributing literature on breast cancer, voter registration, preparing and serving food at a pantry, and packing food items in preparation for distribution to food pantries. This is a public event and the media, community organizations, volunteers, and those being served are invited to engage with us across the city.

For location times please check Chicago Alumnae’s social media properties – on Facebook at Chicago Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc and at Instagram #dst_chicagoalumnae daily leading up to and including Oct. 19, for updates.

This Regional Day of Service is in line with the sorority’s Five-Point Programmatic Thrust and will focus on economic development, educational development, international awareness and involvement, physical and mental health, and political awareness and involvement. Across the Midwest Region thousands of acts of service will occur on this day.
