The 104-year-old Chicago Defender, among the nation’s oldest and most influential Black-owned newspapers, has been awarded the prestigious Russwurm Award during this year’s National Newspaper Publishers Association Merit Awards Gala.

With two first place and two third place awards, including the John H. Sengstacke General Excellence Award, Defender President Michael House took the organization’s most coveted award this year. The Merit Awards Gala, among a staple event during the organization’s annual summer convention, is sponsored by the NNPA Foundation.

“It is a high honor to receive such a prestigious award,” House said. “It validates the hard work and commitment of the Defender‘s entire staff over the past year-and-a-half to the highest standards of journalist excellence.”

“Winning the Russwurm in our first year after changing from a daily to a weekly is a testament to the hard work put in by the staff,” said Defender executive editor Lou Ransom. “It is also a huge win for Real Times, Inc., because our sister paper, The New Pittsburgh Courier, finished as the runner-up.”
