Saturday was Chicago Defender Day at Operation/PUSH, 950 E. 50th St.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson, head of PUSH and the Rainbow Coalition, honored the Defender’s move to its new address on 45th Street and King Drive, and hosted a subscription drive.

Defender President Michael House addressed the crowd at PUSH’s weekly televised service, thanking the community and the Rev. Jackson for their support of the newspaper.

“The Defender is the only place that lifts our businesses up and lifts our young people up,” House said, explaining the paper’s critical role in and for the Black community.

The Chicago Defender was founded on May 5, 1905 by Robert Sengstacke Abbott. By the start of World War I, the Chicago Defender was the nation’s most influential Black weekly newspaper with more than two thirds of its readership base located outside of Chicago. A century later, the Chicago Defender is still empowering the community.
