Several college scholarships were awarded by the Chicago Defender Charities at its Bud Billiken Scholarships Awards Gala Thursday at the DuSable Museum. The event recognized and celebrated the student recipients in a festive evening with family and friends that highlights the importance of education. The goal, according to Retired Col. Eugene Scott, CDC president, was to honor accomplished individuals whose community service work in some way encourages, embraces and furthers the educational goals of our youth.

Anchored by the world renowned Bud Billiken Parade and Picnic, one of the largest back-to-school parades and cultural celebrations in the nation, the Defender Charities annually award more than $300,000 in college scholarships to deserving African-American students.
