Dear Chat Daddy, My $20,000 a month habit: shopping!

Dear Chat Daddy,

I am a 28-year-old single male with a great paying job, but I believe I may have a compulsive shopping disorder. I shop so much that I get a high from shopping, but I have not paid my rent in over two months. In just the past month, I have spent over $20,000 on clothes and accessories alone. My family is truly worried that I am not doing enough saving for a rainy day. My boyfriend says he is going to leave me because I do not realize that I have a problem. Please help me.

-Gotta Shop ‘Til I Drop Dear

Gotta Shop ‘Til I Drop,

Oh wow. I am so glad that you wrote me. First, let me applaud you for having enough courage to admit that you do have a problem. Truth be told, you are a shopaholic. Admitting and accepting your issue is indeed the first step to healing and getting your life back on track. My brother, not paying your rent will be a bad reflection on your credit. In addition, I would like you to seek counseling because you must find out why you are doing all of this excessive spending. It may also be nice to include your family in this journey with you. You will definitely need their unconditional love and support to help you get through this. I would also suggest that you get a financial advisor once you feel that you are ready to be responsible enough to manage and maintain your money. He or she will direct you in being a good steward over your finances. Be encouraged.
