CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Public Schools and its teachers union have reached a deal so no more district-run schools will be asked to voluntarily lengthen their school day this year.

Teachers union president Karen Lewis announced the deal Friday after meeting with school officials.

Lewis says the deal avoids a showdown with the Illinois attorney general, who she said was prepared to file an injunction to stop CPS from pursuing the longer school day. Thirteen schools have already voted to do it.

Chicago schools chief Jean-Claude Brizard says the deal means the union will forgo additional legal proceedings. He called it a "step forward."

Mayor Rahm Emanuel offered financial incentives to schools to lengthen their day. The Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board has voted to block negotiations with more schools.
