SHILOH, Ill. — Safety barriers are going up along a stretch of freeway in southwestern Illinois where a November 2007 crash involving an Illinois state trooper killed two sisters. Crews will install a high-tension cable median barrier on Interstate 64 near Shiloh. That’s the area where 18-year-old Jessica Uhl and 13-year-old Kelli Uhl of Collinsville died. Authorities say state trooper Matt Mitchell was driving his patrol car more than 100 miles per hour when it went out of control, crossed the median and slammed into the sisters’ car. Mitchell is charged with reckless homicide and reckless driving. His trial is scheduled for November. He remains on paid leave, earning $68,000 a year until his trial is finished. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
