CHICAGO (AP) — A judge has extended a key deadline for black firefighter applicants who recently won a discrimination lawsuit against the city of Chicago.
Under a court order entered in August, the city must hire 111 of the applicants and provide $30 million in back pay to about 6,000 others.
The court order stems from a firefighting entrance exam given in 1995 that was later found to be discriminatory against black candidates.
The city asked members of the class-action suit to mail in cards if they were still interested in being considered for a job.
But attorneys for the class say the cards had stale dates on them.
A judge has ordered that the cards be resent and the deadline for their return delayed.
A jobs lottery is set for Oct. 21.
