Maxwell Emcays, 1 of 50 prequalified DCASE chosen artist is giving away $10,000 to push organizational unity in Chicago. He has been giving back to organizations by creating a collaboration hoodie for activist organizers and organizations. The hoodies serve as a fundraising tool and all sales go to the organizations. Maxwell didn’t want to take a profit because he wants to see organizations flourish that Demand Justice. He is the creator of the Demand Justice brand that is seen throughout Chicago. Mr. Emcays has collaborated with Chance’s organization Social Works, Social Change and RAGE to name a few of the hoodie collaborations.
Maxwell Emcays chose the hoodie as a collaboration piece to pay homage to Trayvon Martin. Trayvon Martin was the young man in Florida who was killed by George Zimmerman. He was wearing a black hoodie on the day he died. The organizations understand the collaboration means they will all need to work together to prevail. He already has 26 organizations in conjunction with his efforts. Maxwell states, “It is important that we not only celebrate Black History, but we must create Black Futures – these organizations are doing just that.”
The artist Maxwell Emcays is also serving as a mentor to young men who strive to make apparel. He has his own merchandising company where he creates the product in-house and ships out the product. The young men come to the production office and learn the ins and outs of printing, packaging and being professional in the merchandising field. He is open to having more mentees and for people to take tours of the creating apparel process.
The 26 organizations will be in unity taking a moment on the 26th to wear the hoodies on the day Trayvon Martin’s life was taken. They will honor his life and show solidarity that they will continue to fight for justice in their respected organizations. They will all wear the hoodies Maxwell created as a love offering. He will continue to raise monies for the organizations. If anyone want to support any of the organizations or be involved, they can learn more at: http://www.demanjusticechicago.org.
