Platinum rap music star, radio personality, and member of the Dish Nation cast, Da Brat, returns to her alma mater, Academy of Scholastic Achievement (ASA), a Youth Connection Charter School (YCCS) campus, this Friday, October 1, to join them for a Back to School Block Party to encourage Chicago students to return to school after the Covid pandemic.

The Block Party, open to the public, is a free event, including food, entertainment, and games. The event occurs at ASA’s campus, 4651 W. Madison Street, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.  Born Shawntae Harris, Da Brat grew up in the west side neighborhood and graduated from the Academy of Scholastic Achievement in 1992. Staying connected with her high school has been a priority for Da Brat, a Board member and regular visitor.

“We’re very excited about Da Brat’s upcoming visit,” says ASA Principal Nicole Simpson, Ed.D. Dr. Simpson was Director of Student Services when Da Brat attended ASA. The two have continued a friendship over time. Dr. Simpson remembers Da Brat as a “giver” who offered help and support everyone.

“Da Brat continues to give,” adds Gladys Simpson, Founder and Executive Director of ASA. “Though she lives in Atlanta, Da Brat is a great supporter of ASA and the mission of the school.”

Success has taken her across the country and around the world; Da Brat has never forgotten the Westside of Chicago. As a Board Member, she advocates for youth to build opportunities for them that will help them be successful following their graduation from ASA.  “She takes the time to talk with students and encourage them to stay on track to graduation and beyond,” Mrs. Simpson added.

ASA, established in 1978, a campus of Youth Connection Charter School, remains a top choice for students’ high school education, located in West Garfield Park.
