Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis went into the hospital Monday after “experiencing discomfort Sunday evening,” according to a statement from the CTU.
There were rumors that Lewis had experienced a stroke, but Stephanie Gadlin, union spokeswoman, said that they aren’t true.
“We respect Karen’s privacy just as we value her leadership; I’m sure she’ll determine whether or not another public statement is warranted,” said Gadlin.
“Karen is a freedom fighter, a nationally recognized education advocate and the people’s champ. She’ll be back on her feet in no time. She is resting well and in good spirits–and still thinking of creative ways to secure the future and city our students and their families deserve,” she said.
Lewis has always been in the media spotlight for her blatant critique on Mayor Rahm Emanuel, but lately she has received even more attention. The CTU president has said more than once that she is “seriously considering” running again Emanuel in the next mayoral election. She hasn’t actually declared her candidacy though. Despite that, Lewis has attended speaking engagements for her new series, “Conversations with Karen,” and she has even started fundraising in case she decides to run for mayor.
