CTU Educators Stand in Solidarity with Oakland Educators

A statement from the Chicago Teachers Union on the Oakland Education Association’s decision to go out on strike for the schools their students deserve:

“The more than 25,000 educators, clinicians and school support personnel of the Chicago Teachers Union stand in solidarity with our union siblings in Oakland as they fight forward for better school conditions, more community schools, increased investments in historically Black neighborhood public schools and more supports for students and educators.

“There is no place that an educator would rather be than in their classroom. Regrettably, in Oakland and far too many school districts across the country, school leaders have put bureaucracy and politics ahead of teaching and learning—leaving educators with no choice but to put their paychecks on the line to ensure their students have the resources they need.”

“Whether for school nurses, librarians and social workers or for more access to the visual and performance arts, the Oakland educators are fighting for things that all high-quality neighborhood public schools should have. These resources should be guaranteed if you believe that every student should have access to a safe, welcoming and thriving classroom.”

“We urge Oakland Unified Public Schools to settle a fair contract with the Oakland Education Association, and we stand in solidarity with OEA as they bargain for the common good.”
