The Chicago Transit Authority plans to hold its third and final public hearing this summer regarding the Red Line Extension project as it moves toward completing a federally funded analysis study.
The CTA held two public meetings in December as part of the open house phase of the project so it could get feedback from the community, said Wanda Taylor, a CTA spokeswoman.
“There is no timetable on when the study will be complete,” she said. “The study is part of a five-step process we must complete just to be eligible to apply for federal funds to begin the project.”
According to Taylor, the Red Line Extension project is part of the Federal Transit Administration’s New Starts grant funding program, which is the primary source of capital funding for transit expansion projects at the CTA.
To qualify for New Starts funding, the transit authority must first complete an alternatives analysis study, environmental impact statement, preliminary engineering, final design and last construction.
