CPS may join lawsuit against the state

Not pleased with the current school funding formula, the Chicago Public Schools is considering joining the Chicago Urban League as a plaintiff in its lawsuit against the State of Illinois and the State Board of Education. “Lawsuits take time and are expensive, (but) we may well join the lawsuit,” said Arne Duncan, CEO of Chicago Public Schools. “I applaud the Urban League for taking this action.” Duncan was among a group of clergymen and education activists who joined Urban League President Cheryle Jackson at a Wednesday news conference announcing the lawsuit. The Quad County Urban League chapter is also a plaintiff in the suit that challenges the way the state funds public education in Chicago. “The (funding) system is fundamentally broken,” Duncan added. The lawsuit, filed in the Circuit Court of Cook County, asserts that the state has, for decades, discriminated against families based on race and has deprived Black, Latino and other minority children of a high quality education. Furthermore, the lawsuit states the current school funding system is unconstitutional and a violation of the Illinois Civil Rights Act of 2003. ______ Copyright 2008 Chicago Defender.
