DuSable High School Alumni Coalition for Action organized a gala in celebration of its legacy of pride and achievements from 1935 to the present. Golden Alumni with 50-plus years were honored. Monies raised went toward scholarships for students attending high school at the DuSable Campus. There was also a book signing of Sacred Places from historian Timuel Black, class of 1937. Dr. Grace Dawson, president, and Alice Brown, chairperson.
Chicago State University’s education department held their 2019 Mardi Gras in Spring event to honor community and educational leaders at the Oak Lawn Hilton. Honorees included: Myron Hester, principal of Julian High School; Dr. Debra Nelson; Al Watson; Thomas Dubelbeis; Dr. Blondean Davis; and Dr. Athanase Gahungu. The mistress of ceremonies was Felecia Lawrence, news anchor for WCIU-TV.

Real Men Cook will continue its traditional Father’s Day celebration of serving healthy foods, promoting nutrition and counseling on preventing diseases. The 30th annual event will be held on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 16 from 3–6 p.m. at Hales Franciscan High School, 4930 S. Cottage Grove. The event will also shine a light on mental health; resources will be available on how to grapple with mental illness.

Congratulations
The Edward G. Irvin Foundation Inc., a 501 (c)(3), received a $7,500 grant from the Chicago Fund for Safe and Peaceful Communities for the second year in a row. It is the philanthropic arm of the Chicago Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. The grant was made possible by the Partnership for Safe and Peaceful Communities (@safeandpeacefulchi) to offer enriching, hands-on, peace-promoting activities for youth during the summer.
