EURweb–In our story about a Madam C.J. Walker book that was appraised on Monday’s episode of PBS’ “Antiques Roadshow,” we stated that she had invented the straightening comb, when, in fact, she did not.
“We always are glad to see interest in Madam Walker, but I hope you will allow me to set the historical record ‘straight,’ so to speak,” wrote A’Lelia Bundles, Madam Walker’s biographer and great-great-granddaughter in a letter to EURweb. “Although I know many people have long believed that Madam Walker invented the hot comb, she actually did not.
“Hot combs and metal hair curling and straightening irons had been in use at least as early as the 1880s long before Madam Walker, born in 1867, was in business. Her first products were a shampoo and ointment to heal dandruff and scalp disease.”
