An on-duty Chicago police officer clings to life after being shot in the head early Monday morning in the Englewood community. The 27-year-old plainclothes officer and his partner were responding to a call of shots fired around 12:30 a.m. in the 6000 block of South Hermitage Avenue when shots rang out from a vehicle riding by, police said. The officer, a three-year veteran, was shot in the head and the leg and taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital, Police Supt. Jody Weis told reporters Monday morning. Weis declined to divulge information about the vehicle used in the shooting but said there was more than one person in it. He added that while no one is in custody, the department has received “very good investigative leads.” The unidentified officer is the second police officer critically hurt within the last week. Officer Densey Cole II sustained severe injuries after his police vehicle crashed Wednesday while responding to a call. His service weapon was stolen by someone while he was pinned in the vehicle awaiting medical attention.
