Cook County sheriff puts fugitives' names online

The Cook County Sheriff’s office said Friday that the public can now search its website for the names of 45,000 people wanted for crimes and unpaid child support.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Cook County Sheriff’s office said Friday that the public can now search its website for the names of 45,000 people wanted for crimes and unpaid child support.

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said he hopes the search engine leads more people to contact his office with details about suspects.

"Putting this information online empowers everyone to provide anonymous tips that will help us get violent people off the streets and make sure other wanted subjects are held responsible for their actions," Dart said in a statement.

The database allows visitors to the site to search by name or by the last known location of anyone with a Cook County warrant for their arrest.

The warrants are for crimes ranging from writing bad checks to murder, according to the sheriff’s office.

Nearly 44,000 people with active warrants are listed, along with almost 1,000 parents wanted for failing to pay child support. The databases is updated weekly.

Those who conduct online searchers are warned not to use information found on the site to harass or threaten wanted individuals or their families, or to try to apprehend any of the individuals listed.
