Cook County prosecutor promises to monitor vote

Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez says there will be “zero tolerance” for any illegal election activity as the city’s Tuesday primary vote nears.

CHICAGO (AP) — Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez says there will be "zero tolerance" for any illegal election activity as the city’s Tuesday primary vote nears. Alvarez’s office said Sunday that it is anticipating many election complaints and questions and in response would increase efforts to make sure procedures are followed and laws aren’t broken. Officials say 200 assistant state’s attorneys will be assigned to election duty in all of Chicago’s wards. Alvarez says the State’s Attorney’s Election Fraud Unit has received many complaints and general advice calls. She says her office can arrest and charge election law violators and "we will not hesitate to exercise that authority." The Cook County State’s Attorney’s office will operate an election day intake and dispatch center to deal with complaints. Copyright 2011 The Associated Press.
