A newly designed innovative system by Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court Dorothy Brown now allows a driver to skip traffic court and plead their case online instead. The Online Traffic System, launched June 29 in a testing phase, allows drivers to go online to plead guilty and pay a fine, plead not guilty and request a court hearing and sign up for Traffic Safety School. But only certain traffic offenses can be contested online. They include failure to wear seat belt, front/side windshield cracked, speeding, failure to stop at a stop sign and not yielding to pedestrian in crosswalk. As of Thursday, the clerk’s Web site, www.cookcountyclerkofcourt.org, has completed 2,840 traffic transactions including 1,164 guilty pleas that helped net $73,195 for the county, the office reported in a written statement. “This new service is a special convenience for the citizens of Cook County,” Brown said in a written statement. “It enables individuals to rapidly and conveniently respond to their traffic violations and, if they so choose, pay associated fines and other charges, safely and securely on their home computers.” She explained that the online system is part of a series of Green Court/E-Court initiatives her office has instituted to save taxpayers money, time and to better conserve energy. “Online Traffic Ticket System offers solutions for the usual problems associated with handling one’s traffic citations,” Brown explained. “It’s a time-saver for busy people, and the ability to use a credit card may help them manage payment more effectively.” ______ Copyright 2009 Chicago Defender.
