On Tuesday (April 22), Cook County Commissioner Kisha McCaskill of the 5th District successfully hosted a dynamic and impactful Earth Day Celebration at South Suburban College, located at 15800 State Street in South Holland, Illinois.
The event, presented in partnership with State Senator Napoleon B. Harris III and the Office of Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart, brought together residents from across the South Suburbs for a day of environmental action and community service. The event site buzzed with activity as residents participated in free recycling, on-site document shredding, and prescription drug takeback services.
The Earth Day initiative empowered community members to safely dispose of items, including clothing and textiles, clean Styrofoam, household recycling materials such as paper, plastic containers, metal cans, and glass bottles, as well as electronics, small appliances, newspapers, and outdated documents.
Reflecting on the day’s success, Commissioner McCaskill shared, “As a public servant, I believe our commitment to the environment reflects our commitment to each other. I’m proud to have joined forces with Senator Harris and Sheriff Dart to offer this meaningful opportunity for our residents. Events like these promote sustainability while reinforcing our shared responsibility to protect and uplift our communities.”

The celebration received strong support from regional leaders. Rich Township Supervisor Calvin Jordan praised Commissioner McCaskill’s initiative, stating, “Commissioner McCaskill has once again demonstrated the value of responsive and impactful leadership. Her focus on creating access to essential services while bringing attention to environmental concerns shows her deep commitment to the community. I commend her for organizing such a purposeful event.”
State Representative Debbie Meyers-Martin of the 38th District also praised her, emphasizing the event’s broader impact. “Commissioner McCaskill continues to lead with vision and compassion. This Earth Day event was not just about recycling; it was about restoring and protecting our neighborhoods. I am proud to support her efforts and was honored to see the community unite in such a powerful way.”
