CHICAGO (AP) — Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. says he wants Chicago’s Pullman neighborhood to get national historic park status.
The Chicago Democrat says he will introduce a bill in Congress that will authorize the Interior Department to study the possibility of conferring the status, which would place the neighborhood under the auspices of the National Park Service.
Abraham Lincoln’s home in Springfield has national park status.
The South Side neighborhood was built as a separate town in the 1800s to house workers and executives of the Pullman Co., builders of railroad sleeping cars.
The well-preserved homes and buildings have served as a backdrop for movies including "The Untouchables," ”The Fugitive," and "Road to Perdition."
Jackson was first elected in 1995. This year, he faces a challenge from former one-term Congresswoman Debbie Halvorson.
