Company may get more time for Ill. hydro project

ALTON, Ill. — A Canadian company could get more time under federal legislation to do what developers have proposed for two decades near Alton but never done — turning a Mississippi River lock-and-dam into a source of electricity.

ALTON, Ill. — A Canadian company could get more time under federal legislation to do what developers have proposed for two decades near Alton but never done — turning a Mississippi River lock-and-dam into a source of electricity. The House this week signed off on giving Brookfield Renewable Power an additional six years to equip the Melvin Price Lock and Dam with hydroelectric technology. The Senate still must take up the measure. Under its proposed $400 million to $450 million project, Brookfield in October 2007 got a license from federal regulators for the plant that is expected to generate 404,000 megawatt hours of electricity. That’s enough electricity to power nearly 40,000 homes. The power generated by the dam would be sold to a local utility. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
