Headcount and full-time enrollment at Illinois community colleges increased for Spring 2010 versus Spring 2009, according to the Illinois Community College Board. A headcount of 390,000 was taken for the current semester, resulting in a nearly 8 percent increase versus the slightly more than 380,000 taken for Fall 2009. The full-time enrollment of slightly more than 224,000 was a 10.5 percent increase, surpassing the all-time record 202,000 set last spring. “Not only do we have record numbers of students, but they are taking record numbers of classes, Guy Alongi, chairman of the ICCB, said in a written statement. Fall semester enrollments traditionally outpace spring numbers. “The demand we are seeing are from those who need to enhance their skills to maintain the employability or re-train to re-enter the workforce, and from traditional students who are finding accessibility and affordability make community colleges an attractive option,” Geoffrey Obrzut, president and chief executive officer of the ICCB, said in a written statement.
