Commissioners expected to try veto override

Cook County residents will know soon if a controversial one percentage point increase in the local sales tax stays or goes. County commissioners are expected at Tuesday’s meeting to try to override board president Todd Stroger’s veto of a tax repeal measure. Earlier this month, commissioners voted 12-3 to undo the sales tax increase Stroger backed last year. Fourteen of the 17 county commissioners need to back a veto override for it to be successful. Stroger contends losing the additional money would create a $245 million deficit and result in cuts to the county health care system for the poor. The commissioners’ action comes amid growing disgust over tax increases because of the tough economic times. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
