ComEd is hosting an energy fair Friday and Saturday for needy households struggling to pay their electric bill. The fair runs from 3 p.m.-7 p.m. Friday in the Cultural Center at Malcolm X College, 1900 W. Van Buren St., and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the Olive Harvey College gymnasium, 10001 S. Woodlawn. ComEd officials said anyone who needs assistance paying their electric bill should plan on attending. “ComEd wants to make sure customers know about (our new assistance program) – and sign up for the $15 million available in 2009,” said Anne Pramaggiore, executive vice president of Customer Operations, Regulatory and External Affairs for ComEd. “ComEd is working to provide immediate solutions for customers facing troubling, financial circumstances.” She added that with the winter moratorium on disconnections ending April 1, ComEd is doing everything possible to help customers maintain their electric service. After this date if customers are behind on their bill, service could be interrupted. At the fair, ComEd customers can sign up for a new assistance program, “Care Helping Hand Initiative.” The program offers two options for customers: pay 90 percent of the bill and ComEd would credit the remaining 10 percent, or pay 25 percent of the amount owed (10 percent if they are heat-related customers) and agree to a payment plan. On the payment plan, the balance can be paid over time without interest charges or additional fees. The deadline to apply for the program is March 27. The program is open to ComEd customers who have received a disconnection notice, regardless of household income.
