The Chicago Defender Charities President Col. Eugene Scott recently received the “Veteran of the Month” award for February from the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs. Scott, a retired U.S. Army veteran and former publisher of the Chicago Defender, is also chairman of the National African-American Military Museum and works with numerous military organizations in Chicago. The award honors the work of veterans who provide inspiration to their communities and other veterans through their continued service. He was presented with the award earlier this month at the department’s Salute to African-American Veterans program at the Thompson Center on West Randolph Street. “It’s certainly an honor to be recognized. My main concern, as always, is to make sure veterans of all wars are recognized for their service, and to see the Veteran’s Administration focus on awarding all veterans the benefits they’re entitled to,” said Scott. He entered the Army in 1962 as a Second Lieutenant. He commanded tank forces and was the principal staff officer for Training Operations for the 8th Infantry Division Combat Ready Forces in Germany. He was responsible for training 27,000 soldiers. Scott served two tours of duty in Vietnam and was a Post Commander for two major Army installations. He retired just prior to the Gulf War in 1990 after serving 28 years in the military.
