CHICAGO (AP) – A Chicago man acquitted earlier this year of first-degree murder is suing the city and two police detectives who handled his case.
Deven Kimberly contends in a lawsuit filed Thursday in U.S. District Court that police fabricated evidence to incriminate him in a March 2011 shooting that left 19-year-old Rashad Robinson dead.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports the now 22-year-old Kimberly was arrested in September 2011 and charged with murder. The lawsuit claims an acquaintance of Kimberly identified him as the shooter in return for reduced charges on an unrelated weapons offense.
The lawsuit contends the detectives named knew the witness didn’t see Kimberly pull the trigger and prepared police reports “consistent with this fabrication.”
A spokesman for the city says officials haven’t seen the lawsuit and had no comment.
